Fringe Flicks is a series of film nights in Liverpool run by People Versus TV. We showcase short films, videos, and feature-length films that are unconventional, experimental, subversive, or just downright stupid. Our events provide a platform for artists to present their work and for audiences to experience unique and thought-provoking independent films. Fringe Flicks aims to create a space for creative expression and offers a chance for people interested in weird film to meet each other and chat.
Special Screening: The Grandmother by David Lynch
In February 2025, Fringe Flicks paid tribute to the darkly surreal world of David Lynch with a screening of his 1970 short film, The Grandmother. A haunting mix of live-action and animation, the film explores themes of isolation, trauma, and the search for comfort through Lynch’s signature dreamlike lens. Disturbing yet poignant, it remains an unforgettable piece of cinema that epitomises the uncanny brilliance of his early work.
This screening held special significance as it took place less than a month after David Lynch’s passing, making for an especially moving night of celebration and reflection on his legacy.
We also introduced the first-ever Audience Choice Award, voted for by attendees. The inaugural winner was:
🏆 Brother’s Horn (Majid Asadi, Iran)
Honourable Mentions:
🥈 A Time of Two Joys (Brooklyn Demme, US)
🥈 Poughkeepsie Crispies (E. Shields, Liverpool)
Local artist Emily Lansley created a limited-edition alternative poster for The Grandmother, screen-printed with glow-in-the-dark ink at Liverpool Community Print Station. The poster is now available to purchase through our online store.
